The term refers to the study of isolated microorganisms, cells or biomolecules outside their natural biological context (eg the human body) in a test tube, petri dish or other laboratory vessels. Regulated within the EU by the regulation “In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation” = IVDR
